#20 Media Box – Turn your TV into a Smart TV

For those who don’t want to go down the pay monthly subscription route for IPTV and just want to access free content then you may want to consider purchasing a small media box to connect to your tv.

There are hundreds of boxes out there with differing levels of performance, ease of use, operating software etc.  Many are Android based so those who are familiar with Android tablets or smart phones may be more comfortable using these.   Others to consider are the likes of Apple TV or those using Linux software such as the Raspberry PI DIY computer.   The Raspberry Pi is a credit-card sized computer board that plugs into a TV or Monitor. It’s a miniature ARM-based PC which can be used for many of the tasks that a desktop PC carries out, including spreadsheets, word-processing and games. It is also capable of playing High-Definition video.   These are more suited to the DIY enthusiast who enjoys tinkering, but that said, many novices have got to grips with these little computers and loaded XBMC and various plugins to get free TV content.

Some media boxes come pre-loaded with apps and can also be configured to your requirements – many people are now loading XBMC to access free TV content on the web.  Some boxes come pre-loaded so you just plug and play (easier for those not comfortable loading apps/software).  Visit xbmcplayer.co.uk for a preloaded Android box that comes with software update support.

If you want to have a look at some of these boxes and read up on reviews etc. then Amazon.co.uk is a good place to start.
